Alternative for Air Bed while car camping?

For topics that don't seem to have a home elsewhere.

How about a 4" memory foam mattress designed for car camping. Comes in multiple sizes and you can even order a custom-sized one. I can see one in the back of my Suburban for nights at a trailhead before backingpacking trips.

Richard,

Sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. Unfortunately the link doesn't seem to work. I'll keep at it.

Not able to open the site.

At one point, I thought of going to a local upholstery shop and looking at the foam they had. Probably cheaper than getting a memory foam pad. There are plenty of online sources for open cell foam. Shopping this site can save some money......or not, but I'm not sure what grade of foam would work best.

The other thing is keeping the foam in good condition. Having a cover, like the Cabelas pad, and the site that Richard posted(can see pictures, but not open the site), is ideal, but you pay for it. My cheap memory foam pad is not going to last a long time without a cover.

I wonder what happened to the link. It was working on Weds when I posted but it's not working for me right now. Hopefully they didn't go out of business.

It worked for me the other day as well Richard. Not now though. Hmmm.
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

I kinda Home-brewed a solution to this.

My wife and I had a queen-sized Mattress topper (Memory foam)...Then we got a new one.

I split the old one down the middle and doubled it up to make it a 30" Wide x 74" (cut 6" off the 80" length) long x 5" thick. It is crazy comfy... but is bulky as * and heavy.

Here it is with my 2 yr old from tonight's backyard campout:

Ray,

Looks like what I'm talking about. What did you use for a cover? I really only need it about 24-26" wide. My backpacking Thermarest is only 20" wide, need more width for tent/car camping. I can deal with a bit heavy/bulky since it's just for car campouts.

Maybe a full size memory foam topper (54"), cut in half would be the solution.

Well...mine is actually a cover from a rv bunk mattress, that being said it would be fairly easy to make something equivalent out of some cotton fabric.
