That's a different catch on a fly rod. There are fishing clubs that target gars. They have been around since the age of the dinosaurs.

my pops and brother are getting into targeting gar with flies. tie in a section of white braided rope onto a hook shank, tease out the rope so the fibers are kind of loose/seperated. that's all it is... their teeth get caught in the fibers from the rope you don't have to deal with trying to set a hook in their boney mouth.
