Flybob's New Custom Net

Postby Fishfreak911 » July 26th, 2012, 10:56 pm

Flybob, thanks again for stopping by the studio today to pick up your net. Your smile made ME smile. :)
This wasn't even staged one little bit....Pinky swear...

:bananadance: Nice shirt Flybob! :bananadance:

This commission required that Flybob and I work out the details over Email. We sent CAD drawings and PDFs back and forth until we got it right. It was a fun build for me! I was also challenged to make a new elliptical shaped net hoop form. Flybob also requested an inlaid copper fly of his own creation. He sent me the art, and I engraved and inlaid the fly in copper along with some of the open burl eyes in the cat's eye burl maple. I love using this wood as it has so much character in such a little area. The hoop is shimmering curly maple & black walnut. The custom tied lanyard's hole has a copper ferrule liner.

I absolutely LOVE the ergonomics of this net. It's super light and just feels like an extension of your hand. Flybob was concerned a bit about the length but took a couple of false swipes with it and loved it.

Wear your new S/N T-shirt loud & proud my friend!

These pics are but a small sample of the steps to get the net made but you'll get the jist of it....All of the steps wouldn't fit in this post! It's a lot of work!

Thanks again FLYBOB!

Very cool! Looking forward to seeing it with a fish in the bag Bob! 8-)
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

I can only imagine the dialogue between an Engineer and a Craftsman as you guys planned the net. I think the anticipation on both your parts as to how it would turn out would be something. The process and the net that came from it is beautiful and functional. Classic net.

Greg,
Another nice net. The only thing left now is Bob going to step up his game and catch bigger fish to do that net justice. ;)

 You guys are funny! Wildman, you have NO IDEA how right you are!!!   He's the only client I've had who wanted .dxf or .dwg CAD drawings, let alone knew what those are! It was really satisfying working with someone who knew what he wanted, knew how to get there, and, in the end, produced a very fine product. But then, I guess that is his chosen career right? :ugeek:

Beach bum & Fly Addict, I was teasing Flybob about the size of the net too. Told him he could use it as a "gill net" for fingerlings!

Thanks for the nice words tenandtwo & Mike.s.

D.T., I am awaiting pics too! I want a nice pic for my website under Sierra Nets on the Water http://www.sierra-nets.com/CMS-Sierra/index.php?page=Sierra-Nets-on-the-Water. Right now, my man Lucfish has the #1 spot!

YOU GUYS ARE SETTING THE BAR AT RIDICULOUS HEIGHT FOR ME!

There is NO way I can ever outdo the FISHMEISTER LUC!

All kidding aside, the photos do not do this net justice!
Greg is an amazing craftsman and working with him on this project was a blast, like he said, drawings, sketches, PDFs, all email, heck it was just like at work, but a lot more fun. As he walked me through his processes and the tools that he uses, I asked him if he had a background in composites. Some of his techniques are very similar to what is done in aerospace.
I now know how durable this net REALLY is and will not be afraid to take it out on the water.

And coolest part of all, that is MY fly on the handle!

As for bigger fish, if I ever did catch one, do you think I would be foolish enough to post about it and ruin my STELLAR reputation! :D

Thanks Greg!

OH yeah the T-shirt was a nice touch too!

Oh my... this thing is BEYOND flashy and beautiful... I've never used a net. But if I knew I could get one that gorgeous, I might reconsider. Oh who am I kidding... I don't catch anything big enough to render the use of a net.
