Opening Day - did anyone venture out?

Postby Ants » May 2nd, 2017, 9:10 am

I know the fishing options have been limited by huge runoff on some waters and ok flows on others. Then, there are the crowds! Not to mention, who wants to hike through a snow pack and icefish on a high elevation lake?

But, did anyone get out?

My opening day routine was providing support services for a marathon in San Luis Obispo. We got to do some exploring during the travels and found a coastal lake or two (no fly rods on the trip) with nice oak trees and Spanish Moss. It was a fun surprise to see that coastal marine influence.

Just curious.

My personal opening day will be during the next couple of days.

I ventured out, but didn't know if the body of water I was fishing was part of the season opener, or whether it was year around.

And the water was raging. Did a lot of scouting for a repeat venture, perhaps after the run off subsides.

Locally, our streams are looking great:

Nice looking trout!

Those stream shots look familiar. If the stream is the one I am thinking, fishing is year round. I remember being there with ice on the stream and icicles from the seepage in cut banks along the stream. It seems snow would not be likely unless it was a northern exposure and sheltered among trees at a higher elevation.

Nice to see good flows and nice fish.

With year around fishing on the bay and beaches of San Diego and the nearest trout stream 100's of miles away, opening day has lost it's meaning for me.

Last true "opener" that I attended was GTW back in 2010. That was July, of course. It was the best time. Never forgetting that one. That being said, the last Saturday in April opener has lost its lustre with me as well. last few years have been horribly snowpack-free. I wouldn't go because I didn't want to be part of stressing an already over-stressed environment. This year, I wont be going at all - only because the runoff will be going through August, maybe longer. And since I'm only fishing the unregulated streams and creeks, I'm doubly hosed. Thank God for Richard dragging me into the salt, and the salt being in my own backyard. There's never too much or too little water here.

Like others have mentioned, the trout opener does not mean much to me. Most of the trout waters I fish are open all year, and all the other stuff I do is open all year. And I did the opener last year (after not doing it for 10 years) and I remembered why I don't do it any more because it was a freakin zoo out there.

Gonna be a while before my Eastern Sierra waters have settled down enough to visit.

THe river we'll be on is a tail water so it should be okay. The higher stretches will be up. AND, I'm bringing my offshore gear for albacore, halibut, and ling. Hopefully, this blind squirrel can find a nut.

Love that area, especially around Cameron Flats during hopper time! I might have to make a swing through there myself in early September. ;)

I love the opener, I just have never wanted to be there for it. Why go all that way to fish the most crowded weekend of the season. What I love about it is that Crowley is open again, wooohooo.
