Re: Heritage Trout Challenge

Ya, my memory sucks, I think maybe this is where I got the idea, I wonder if anything further has happened with it besides just talk:

Re: Heritage Trout Challenge

Weren't there some trips into the hinterlands last summer to catch "pure" KKRs for use as broodstock in the Kern River Hatchery?

Re: Heritage Trout Challenge

Great question DA. I was just thinking that the headwaters of the tribs to the Kern must have essentially pure KKRs, as there are so many impediments (impassable waterfalls) that no stockers could possibly get up that far. Then I realized that if that was so, then the non-stockers/KKRs couldn't get ...

Re: Stripper's Hand

Needless to say I was disappointed this thread had nothing to do with exotic dancers. Ha! It hurt so much that when I caught the big'un that took me deep, I couldn't even grab the handle with my left hand to reel the fish in. I had to turn the rod over, hold it in my left hand with the reel on top ...

Stripper's Hand

Yes, Stripper's Hand! I went to Catalina Island a couple weeks ago, and developed a hand "injury" while fishing there. I'm right handed and strip the fly in with my left hand, and after about 6 straight hours of essentially constant stripping flies, and stripping them in just as fast as I ...

Re: Sage X

I threw a couple dozen casts on the tarmac with the 8wt X a couple weeks ago, and I also noticed how light it was in the hand. Crazy light! Not that I have much experience with 8 wts as I've only ever cast one other (my old tried and true Redington 8 wt that Ive cast probably 10,000+ times) but comp...

Re: Passing of Westlake Dave

So, so, sorry to hear this. He and I met through the Kern board and I drove with him to a fly fishing meeting in Ventura, just last year. He never mentioned the cancer, but did talk my ear off about you and your brother! :-) He loaned me some fly fishing CDs, which I returned to him when he called m...

Re: To Dry Fly or Die?

Thanks Alex. I've also brought along a second reel for dry fly fishing (my nymph rods cast dries well enough for the short-lived hatches) but of course it takes time to re-rig the rod. And then re-rig it again back to nymphing when the hatch dies down.

Re: To Dry Fly or Die?

When I fish, I always take two rods with me. Alex, what is your system for this? I've tried carrying a second rod in hand, and then end up accidentally leaving the second rod behind somewhere as I move up river. On open rivers, like most of the Upper O, I can carry a second rod in the loops for tha...

Re: Pinch those barbs down cuz.......

This is a tough one, while I feel for your friend and his 5 hundo, we all know that fishing (and hunting, driving, etc.) are highly regulated activities, and forgetting something like the barb requirement, which is basically rule #1, is kinda cra cra. On a salt water board a couple days ago a guy as...
