Fish and Migration

I have always found it entertaining how sometimes (barring the influence of human activity) one finds a good number of fish in a section of creek and then, on another outing, finds few (or the other way around). It's this nuttiness that often has me returning to a stream over and over again. I see t...

Re: Small Stream Leader

Since some of my earlier posts, I have ramped-up efforts to better tune the leader game and have come up with the following. None of it is rocket science and I have yet to get to trying the furled leader approach (just got some via mail order) and not yet but soon will try those links. Anyways, for ...

Re: State considering "putting a halt to fishing"

Wow that Tulare County sign ... don't know what to say. I went down a slight rabbit-hole last night and read the initial meeting agenda: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=177990&inline and some additional materials that included comments. Really interesting and worth at least 10...

Re: Critter Spotting

Earlier this week in urban Los Angeles, I noticed 2 squirrels frolicking and a possum walking across a couple of lawns at 10am broad daylight. There ya go. Similarly, I watched a skunk rooting for something (it was in hot pursuit) on a hillside during the late afternoon under cloudy skies. Did not ...

Re: Critter Spotting

NorCalBob and clee ... thanks for chiming-in. I realize now that my post does not address the distinction between "better known" waters/parks versus ones that are more obscure or under the radar. As a surfer in LA County, I am already at risk of an actual fine+ticket for going surfing or e...

Critter Spotting

I have noticed an uptick in the ease with which I am spotting animals. I think the correlation between the reduced number of people "out there" may be a contributing factor. Anyone else experience such? In addition to the actual animals (deer, skunks, various reptiles, birds of prey, rabbi...

Re: Small Stream Leader

Loving this thread. Man oh man, I forgot all about those "leader links". I remember many of my mentors as a young fly angler frowning hard on those things but, *, makes sense. I will revisit! Why the * not? THANKS! I do recall often nail-knotting butt-section to fly line with a needle such...

Re: Small Stream Leader

Thank you gentlemen. I love these suggestions and have already been planning on chopping a DT5 in half and overlining a four weight with the half 5. The furled leader is something I all but forgot about. Good call. Thanks again.

Small Stream Leader

I am way overdue to seriously start reconsidering leader length when fishing small waters especially when dapping, bow and arrow casting and super short casts are 95% of one's needs. The math seems obvious and I am wondering why the idea does not pop up more often in fly fishing conversation. Exampl...

Re: Park/Trail Closures

Washington state's declaration (ouch!):

* Probably a response to abate shoulder-to-shoulder situations. Still ... wow.

Park/Trail Closures

Hello All, Broadly defined be it Yosemite all the way to numerous Los Angeles City Park trails ( See: https://www.welikela.com/mrca-closes-parks-and-trails-because-angelenos-cant-keep-their-distance/ ) I am curious what closures are happening think it would be good to share insights or obervations e...
