3rd what BB said. I use an old aluminum ski pole, it basically just dangles by a tether behind me in the water when I'm not using it. Now and again it gets caught in something, but it's usually very easily un-stuck. I guess I could find a shorter tether so it would get caught even less.
I voted "yes" but the reality is I've only used a staff on the Kern so far, but I use it there every time now after the falls I took my first time in the river.

Couple years ago I hiked down to the FotK just after a thunderstorm had washed the ash from a recent fire into the Little Kern. Man, that little river was as thick as chocolate syrup. Anyway, it has seemed to recover pretty well.
