Re: Trout Naming

Definitely beyond the entry to genetics I studied in college, 14-15 years ago. From what I remember, the ability to creat fertile offspring indicated a lack a speciation. In other words species is the same, and you are basically looking at a subspecies difference. This indicates the differences are...

Re: Mexican Golden Trout and other species

Thanks for the comments, Ray. You and I are certainly on the same page with regards to maintaining the health of our native trout. Allowing a little more soapbox stuff: You wrote: I believe hatchery programs can be critical in restoring the fish WITHIN their native ranges, as well as creating "...

Re: Trout Naming

Yeah, I knew the rainbow related species or sub-species could all interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring. Not sure about the offspring of bows-browns, bows-brookies. Fertile offspring suggests a pretty close genetic relationship, while healthy but sterile offspring suggests a close but no...

Re: Trout Naming

Mix things up further by looking at interbreeding of various 'trout'. Can rainbows and browns interbreed? I know they don't because 'bows spawn in the spring while browns are fall spawners. But browns and brookies can interbreed and actually do in the wild. Rarely happens but it does happen. The of...

Trout Naming

Steve and Sasha got me started on this with the discussion about Mexican Trout. OK, so I've always been a little confused about one thing: Why are Trout called Trout, and Salmon Salmon. When if we go by the Scientific classifications, the lines are drawn wrong in common language. Pacific "Salmo...

Re: Mexican Golden Trout and other species

First off, Steve, this is a Great soapbox to be on. All of the Mexican trout found along the Pacific Ocean side are long descendents of Coastal Rainbows that have been able to create their own subspecies over time. I believe you are likely correct on this, and if the Mexican trout are studied more, ...

Re: The Skinny

Fish move around on their own all the time. Just because you see the same fish in the same hole seven trips in a row, don't think they won't move if they want/need/can. On the other hand, maybe, just maybe, that next hole has an undercut bank or ledge, or a big boulder with a cavity beneath it. IN ...

Re: The Skinny

So the question Ty asked me about the long skinny fish in question, which he alluded to here:

Would it have good or right to have moved the fish into another pool with a more robust food supply? would that have been "playing God" too much? Or should we let whatever happens, happens?
