Good waders for hiking? Wading pants?

John, I use light weight reddington wading pants. They are light enough to carry with you. I like to wear them when I am hiking less than 5 miles. Yes you can sweat a ton at times. I try not to wear them when it gets too hot. I have older pair of Simms wading pants they are much thicker which is gre...

Most worthless thing in all of fly fishing

I made the mistake of buying the Korkers first generation wading boots, because the ability to switch soles was appealing. Too bad the process to switch them out wasn't designed properly and after 'stretching' the plastic railings that held the soles in place, I could not walk in sand or mud, as th...

SIMMS Freestone or Redington Sonic Pro

I have both Sonic and Simms wading pants. The sonic pants are a little thinner. It is better in the summer but not as good for bush walking.

What's the coldest you've fished in CA?

I have fished with temps in the teens, and it sucked every time. Fingers get so cold I can't tie on the fly. Frozen guides... it just sucks to be freezing cold. I don't mind it too much if I am hiking in the teens and it warms up when I start fishing. The worst experience I had fishing in the cold ...

What's the coldest you've fished in CA?

Upper Owens in January 5 years ago I think it was 3 degrees. Caught a nice brown and then broke off the tip of a graphite rod. It was terrible until sun broke through the fog.

How Do You Keep Your Flies Organized?

I have a a box for dry flies, nymphs, streamers, carp files. Over flow boxes. Then I have a few small boxes I will put a handful of flies in for a lightweight trip. Then I extra flies in a big ziplock bag. Every year I spent 30 min and try to organize my flies.

I was also thinking of going there, that is a very delicate fishery. I hope the fire does not destroy it.

The Fly Fish Journal

Funny....right now the LA river has more moving water that's fishable then any other stream or creek in SoCal. I enjoy the stark contrasts there and love seeing the wildlife that thrives along it's banks. I used to dig up redworms from my backyard and go out there and catch tilapia till the cholos ...
