Re: Advice on Off Road Rescue Gear

Hi John, I drive a two wheel drive pickup. One essential I take as I travel along are cable chains, not just for snow, but for gnarly conditions. With 2WD, weight over the rear tires is very helpful. Depending on what total weight you are carrying, more weight may not be needed. If you don't want to...

Re: Heritage Trout Challenge

Congratulations on another step toward those wonderful Heritage Trout certificates. The DFW does not have any easy job in managing the Heritage Trout program. Anomalies exist. For example, the Cottonwood lakes area is manages as a breeding area for Goldens, but Goldens caught there do not qualify fo...

Re: Heritage Trout Challenge

The Heritage Trout Challenge is not a scientific or research program. It is a social program to encourage anglers to sample the diversity of water and fish in CA. To me, a good comparison would be if one visited ethnic neighborhoods in LA. If you visited an Asian restaurant, would it be important if...

Re: Heritage Trout Challenge

Dark shadow, Why are you so opposed to the Heritage Trout challenge? Do you have a special agenda or you simply like to urinate on someone else's parade? Pure anything, on a genetic basis, always fails when it is carried far enough back in time. Of course, genetic testing wasn't available at that ti...

Re: Heritage Trout Challenge

The change I noted was that the Master Certificate can be submitted when 11 heritage fish are caught instead of 12. Currently, fishing is not allowed in the waters of the Paiute Cutthroat trout.

Re: Reminder 2016 Steelhead Report Card

Thanks for the reminder. I sent in my steelhead and salmon card with no fishing.

I still need to get my 2017 license, but that will happen soon.

Re: Super Raffle 2016!!

Only one ticket is needed and allowed to win. I guess the other tickets were the donation.

Having all the tickets go to the donation would not be a bad thing, but I could also be a gracious winner (if needed).

Re: How Do You Keep Your Flies Organized?

It seems to me (but I may be wrong) that there is trade off between switching flies and altering your presentation. My tendency is to change presentation until I get results. For reference, I don't keep detailed logs or memory as to what worked at a particular time or location. So, in my vest I have...

Re: Czech/Euro set up

I found Dynamic Nymphing by George Daniel to be an excellent reference. Mark Allen is an excellent instructor, but I can't convince him to set in my bookshelf until I have another question. George Daniel had given many presentations to the So CA fly groups so there are videos available also. Have fu...

Re: Suggestion

Hi Wanderingblues, I re-read your details on a private FB page for FFA members. That seems to have a lot of appeal, but I am concerned about the actions that Facebook will automatically implement. If I become a friend, I am tied into your other 622 friends. Facebook will gladly refer all their posts...

Re: Suggestion

The quandary between Facebook and a forum continues. I learned a lot during my ten years of forum posts ( and reading books). Facebook has been a recent activity for the last 6-8 months. Facebook has a tendency to be vanity oriented (see the big / special / small fish I caught). Any useful informati...

Re: Wigged out... (a vent session)

It is good that you are concerned about things in the ocean because they can frighten or even kill you. If you are enjoying whatever ( float tube or other) puts you in the bay / ocean, the concern about critters beyond you control goes way down. If the pleasure doesn't overcome the anxiety, quit. Th...

Re: Really Great bug book?

Mark is much more adept with being successful with nymphing and a few attractor style flies. I have experienced sessions with similar success, but despite the number of fish, I still feel like I am a 'one-trick-pony'. Besides, I accumulated a diverse series of rods and gear and flies to fish techniq...

Re: Really Great bug book?

I have been looking for a similar type bug identification book myself, but have not had any luck finding one. However, thanks to Dave Hughes (a coauthor in prior reply), another suggestion is Essential Trout Flies. Hughes breaks down fly tying into 31 indispensable pattern styles, (for tying purpose...
