Re: Best Cold Weather Fishing/Hunting Gloves?

Charles, It's been so cold this last week that all of my duck calls freeze up after you blow them once (8 degrees one morning with a high of 14). Lots of birds though! Have a lot of mallards, pintails, snows, and teal in the freezer. The honkers have eluded me so far, even though they are here by t...

Re: Best Cold Weather Fishing/Hunting Gloves?

Wore these in freezing conditions in Utah, Bishop and last year in your duck blind:

Obviously not for fly fishing. It's also not too thick as to interfere with my beloved double triggers.

Re: Biscuits and Gravy at 11,000 feet!

Had those on my last backpacking trip definitely will buy again. Surprisingly those actually have the texture and internal dryness like B&G. I feared they would be a glutinous mess but they are not. As with all Mountain House products I never follow the directions on the label. I only use half t...

Re: Road Trip Advice Thread

Personally I'd reroute. From Reno head north to SE Oregon, go through Idaho into Wyoming. Bypass Utah, I think it's better fishing and less pressure. But that's just me.

Re: Anyone use rubber soled Patagonia boots?

I tried these boots yesterday and I can tell you I'm not nearly as confident in them studless as I am with Simms Vibram soles. I'm definitely studding them. At first I didn't think they were as comfortable out-of-the box as Simms but once I broke them in they are fine.

Re: Anyone use rubber soled Patagonia boots?

...We're talking very little algae and not much more silt, the kind of stuff that's easily defeated with felt or studs. I recall once fishing with my buddy on X Creek one Summer. When we split up I was falling all over the place. I was was wearing rubber. My buddy was wearing felt. I was fishing a ...

Re: Anyone use rubber soled Patagonia boots?

Midger There are really too many options for lightweight packing boots. All of the Simms line up are over 3lbs a pair. All boots now are designed like moonboots, big and clumsy. Orvis discontinued their utralight packing boot ages ago which was the best option as it crumbled easily but may not have ...

Anyone use rubber soled Patagonia boots?

I haven't used studs since my Simms L2 boots but that was back when rubber wading soles technology was still in it's infancy. I have a pair of Simms Riverteks and haven't ever felt the need to stud them. I recently bought a pair of discounted Patagonia Rockgrip boots for lightweight backpacking boot...

Re: Barbless flies

I'm sure there still are fishermen who will fish with barbed hooks wherever legal (and sometimes illegal) because they feel that they lose less fish with them. Tiers and flyshops don't want to lose that segment of market. And the last time I looked, it's much easier to de-barb a hook than it is to ...

Re: Stranger in a strange land

Wecome to the People's Republic. You've chosen a very fishy area of CA. Lots of good water to explore. The Truckee both in CA and NV are difficult but rewarding. You'll be surprised when you find a baby-lobster sized crayfish on the water. Pyramid lake in NV is not far. East Walker down south. Many ...

Re: Four pound tippet or fluorocarbon

One thing I like about Fluoro is that it doesn't decay as quickly over time like mono. If I have mono sitting in vest for awhile I often change it out if its too old or at least I do if I'm fishing an area with a potential of a fish of a lifetime. I don't have that worry with fluoro. To add to what ...
