Re: The San Gabes 2023 and beyond ...

I didn't know they were relocating fish from San Gabriel Reservoir to both the W and E Forks. I hopped on my bike about 2 weeks ago, and almost made it to Cogswell. I had the opportunity to fish a few good stretches and got a pretty large rainbow (about 16 to 17 inches) which I assume was relocated ...

Re: The San Gabes 2023 and beyond ...

I definitely need to read up on what is happening, as the San Gabes are in my back yard and was the first piece of moving water that I fished as a kid. It sure has changed. Considering how many agencies are involved, I wonder if bureaucracy and red tape are preventing proper management of this regio...

Re: Shad Fishing in NorCal

Bernard wrote:I have seen big schools of them in Pyramid Lake (the one in So Cal).

About 3 years ago, I saw quite a few, near the mouth of the creek. My buddy swears I was seeing things, until last year when there were pictures of them. I hear they're spunky fighters.

Re: Derelict Dams - The Santa Monica Mountains Edition

There's only one way to find out! Haha, the only problem is that when I make the trek out there, I'm taking advantage of the lake. Their quarantine policy is the strictest in the state, which means that there are hardly any boaters. About half a dozen times a year, we go out there, and rent a boat,...

Re: Derelict Dams - The Santa Monica Mountains Edition

Bernard, Have you ever ventured to the Santa Ynez in between Cachuma and Bradbury? I have caught some pretty niced sized smallies in the deep pools there 15 years ago, and was wondering if the influx of water into Cachuma may have replenished that area, since because the past ten years of going up t...

Re: Local Report - In the name of academic curiosity

Back when my dad first immigrated to this country and LA, which was the early 70s, he used to talk about driving to Blue Point and hanging out at the river. He swears up an down that the stretch had some 'big' fish, but don't know if those were just fish stories. He did mention they were so plentifu...

Re: Derelict Dams - The Santa Monica Mountains Edition

Isn't the mass amount of rains supposed to entice steelhead from entering their ancestral homes? I know an acquaintance that years (if not a decade) ago, caught a pretty nice sized steelhead off the surf in Malibu. I wonder if we'll have any incidental by catches from the surf this year. And I wonde...

Re: Local Report - In the name of academic curiosity

It's a total grind to get there but I think this year we're going to work up to it and who knows? So, I confirmed from a little birdy that the road that leads towards what used to be Blue Point was open, and you could drive all the way up until the "Pot Hole Trail Head," which Im not fami...

Re: Local Report - In the name of academic curiosity

First off, apologies for my report being sort of bitter sweet but that's southern California trout for you right? Bitter sweet is usually the case as of late. But, I find myself having the mindset that I'm doing scouting, rather than fishing, and that I brought my fly rod, 'just in case.' That way ...

Re: Local Report - In the name of academic curiosity

Jeff, I've gone only a few hundred yards up on that fork right after crossing the dam. But, the area I'm referring to is heading towards Bobcat Canyon, on the WF proper. It just seems like that area holds much more water than the fork heading north past the dam. Unfortunately, there is no trail that...

Re: Local Report - In the name of academic curiosity

Glad to see there are survivors, even tho they may be small guys.

I've always wanted to grab the bike and head out there and fish near the Reservoir.

Anybody fished the WF past Cogswell? From maps, it looks like the blue line is there year around.

Re: Is FFA Dead?

Someone asked me what my biggest fly fishing memory was in 2022. I had to think about it for quite a while, and then dig into my photo roll to see if I even fly fished this year. In fact, I can count the number of times I went to the Sierra this year, and it was ONCE. We camped up along Robinson Cre...

When Do You Stop?

So, question for the guys who have been fishing the locals for a while now. Has it come to the point where you no longer do it? The last time I headed down 1N09, it was rutted, my poor Tacoma was shaking its head, and for what? To catch a pair of 6 inch fish. 2+ hours door to door, bunch of gas.... ...
